Unplug those blocked sewers
We’ve all been there – we’re in the shower, and suddenly we feel the water start to rise up around our feet. A clogged up drain pipe is doing its worst. Or while brushing your teeth by the sink, all of a sudden the sink starts to fill up. Dealing with choked drains is all together an unpleasant experience because it is complicated and unsanitary. Yet many residential bathrooms or kitchen will suffer from a blocked drainpipe incident at one particular point or another. The best course of action for you is to be prepared to deal with it by learning how to unblock bathroom drainage.
First, let’s look at why drains become choked and what are the main causes of a blockage.
Hair, dust and other particles getting stuck in the space between the drainpipe and the pipes are the main cause. The problem is further exacerbated when household products such as soaps, detergents, shampoos and conditioners and others are allowed to build up on the growing accumulation. Finally the accumulation becomes too thick to allow any water to pass through and it is then that the drains get completely clogged. If you notice water getting accumulated in your tub or sink, you definitely have choked drains.
How do you unblock your drainage?.
If you happen to have a blocked sink or bath, there are some steps you can take to clear up the passage ways and create a normal flow once again. Whether you are working with a sink or a bath drainpipe, the first step to take is to remove the stopper. In case of a bathroom sink, the plug can be removed easily with a simple pull or it might need the complex effort of unlocking the hook keeping it in place from under the sink. With your bath tub, you can either unscrew the plug right at the drain pipe or removing the overflow plate to remove the assembly.
Once you remove the plug, you may then be able to see the source of the blockage. Chances are you’ll see a clump of hair mixed with other materials just below the drain. Try to pull it out, as much as you can. Use a wire from a clothes hangar or some other apparatus if you have difficulties reaching the blockage or grabbing the build up so that you can pull it out. As soon as the blockage is removed, water will start running freely through the drainpipe.
However other methods can be used in case the blockage is unreachable even with a hanger. Use a drainpipe plunger to loosen the blockage that is deeper down the pipework. To begin with, you should plug the overflow drain pipe to make sure that the plunger has optimum suction. Then, put the plunger over the drain pipe and push up and down half a dozen times. When you let go of the plunger, any excess water should flow out right away if you have dislodged the blockage.
If the plunger method fails to properly unblock your drain pipe, you may have to resort to using chemical drainpipe cleaner. This method should only be used as a last resort because the chemicals used are dangerous and can be harmful to your bathroom fixtures.
