Congested drains can be banished

How would you handle a clogged drainpipe in your toilet? – Keep a plunger handy for such emergency situations. The process is pretty straightforward to apply. But the last thing you want to do is be too aggressive and pulse to quickly. To ensure that the plunger works effectively, wholly cover the drainage with its bell-shaped head, and gently push it down once, and immediately come up, so that suction is created. The suction created when the plunger is pulled up will hopefully dislodge the material clogging the toilet, tub or sink in your bathroom. Some washbasins and bathtubs are provided with overflow openings that have to be blocked temporarily with a wet cloth for the plunger to develop effective suction.

The other alternative to using your waste pipes plunger is to use a commercial product that uses chemicals to loosen the blockage, such as caustic soda. However this option should be used only after you have used the plunger to unclog your drain. Run the chemical into the drain pipe and allow it to work for about 30 minutes before flushing the drainpipe with hot water. Wear proper clothes while dealing with chemicals, remember the strong chemicals can spill on your clothes and spoil them so be careful with that. If you are not careful the chemical filled water may splash on your face while you are using the waste pipes plunger, so use some eye protection for the same. Just be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid any unnecessary problems.

The next thing you can attempt to use if your plunger is ineffective is to loosen the nuts holding the P-trap in place with pliers or a pipe wrench. Removing the drain pipe trap can release a sudden rush of waste water, so keep a mop and pail handy, put a bucket underneath the p-trap before you disconnect it. If you don’t want to damage the chrome finish of your pipes and also to get a better grip on the pipe, you can wrap the jaws of your wrench with electrical tape. You will be able to check the drainage P-trap for any obstructions in the pipe opening after you remove it. If you don’t see anything, the problem might unfortunately go far deeper and may be located between the trap and the drainage soil stack.

A deep clog in the toilet can be loosened by a toilet auger. With a bathtub or sink, however a drainage snake should be used. The flexible snake wire can be inserted deep into pipework of smaller diameter. By twisting the adjustable handle to drill into the clog, you then pull the obstruction up and out of your drain. After removing the clog, reassemble the P-trap and let hot water flow into the drain pipe to double check it works properly. Make certain the whole thing is tightly closed and check for any leakage in the P-trap and ensure that the water flows well.

If the drainpipe is still stopped after all these measures, or if the problem reoccurs chronically, employ a competent plumber or drainage contractor to fix it. You will need to call a professional plumber or drains service when the blockage is in the sewer or soil track or when it is due to tree roots, or when the pipe has collapsed due to some reason.
